On October 27th 2017, the Government of Manitoba published its “Made-in-Manitoba Climate and Green Plan”, which establishes a carbon market for the province. Like Alberta, Manitoba’s market recognizes the importance of agricultural carbon credits and is expected to develop a carbon offset program involving agriculture, forests and wetlands. The plan states the province will adopt or develop protocols for potential carbon offset projects such as:
- low or no till farming
- the capture and destruction of methane gas from livestock manure storage facilities, or combustion of this energy to produce electricity or heat
We have been generating and selling carbon credits for farmers in Alberta since 2008 and are excited by this new opportunity. Over the coming weeks, we are planning meetings with farmers to answer your questions about the carbon market and what is needed to participate in it.
